Grandma Stone's Kuchen

Ingredients for the Coffee Cake:
¾ cup milk, scalded
1 stick oleo (margarine)
½ cup sugar
3 eggs
1 pkg. dried yeast
1/3 cup warm water
5 cups flour
1½ teaspoons salt
1½ teaspoons powdered Cardamom
1 can pie filling (or fresh fruit)
Ingredients for the Streusel:
1½ cups flour
1 cup sugar
1½ sticks oleo, softened
½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon

In 4 to 6 quart covered pan, mix ¾ cup scalded milk and 1 stick oleo. When cool add ½ cup sugar and 3 well beaten eggs. Dissolve the package of yeast in 1/3 cup warm water and 1 Tablespoon sugar (it will foam). Add this to the liquid mixture. In separate bowl, sift together twice 5 cups flour with 1½ teaspoons salt and 1½ teaspoons Cardamom. Mix dry ingredients with liquid mixture. Beat together well; it will be stiff and hard work. Let rise 2 hours or overnight (in covered pan). This will make 4 Kuchen. Grease (4) 8" round cake pans and divide dough into 4 parts. Place each part into a pan and use greased fingers to spread the dough to the edge of pans. Add pie filling of your choice, such as blueberry or apple. One can is enough for all four pans.

To make the streusel, mix together 1½ cups flour (rounded), 1 cup sugar, 1½ sticks of softened oleo, ½ teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. After well mixed, sprinkle over the pie filling on the Kuchen. Let rise approximately 1½ to 2 hours in a warm place. Bake in 350° oven for 30 minutes.

Kuchen may be frozen in tightly sealed freezer bag.
